Cancer. Six tiny letters have the ability to change a life. Lives actually.
I haven’t been diagnosed with cancer but I have certainly been affected by it. I’ve had relatives, friends, loved ones and acquaintances who have overcome this disease and also those who have lost their brave fights. To bear witness to their strength and to travel with them along their journey has been an honour.
It is so hard to stand back and watch and feel as though you can’t do anything tangible to help. This desire to make a difference is the reason why I have joined to work with Cancer Council ACT. I have participated in Canberra’s Relay For Life since 2011 and in 2014 I joined the Fundraising Committee so I could take that extra step and assist even more. If my running or walking or even my baking can raise money to help individuals in need or to go toward research into this dreadful disease then I will do everything I can.
Two weeks ago my Dad told me he had been diagnosed with cancer. The fight just became even more personal.
