A few years ago at a school event, Cancer Council ACT’s SunSmart representative, David Wild, approached Scouts ACT with the great idea of having a SunSmart badge for our Scouts.
Seeing as the SunSmart badge could teach our Scouts some great life skills about skin cancer prevention and have fun while learning, it seemed like a great fit for both organisations.
After our Commissioners developed a Scout/SunSmart program for both our Joey (6-8 year olds) and our Cubs Sections (7.5-11 years old), it (the badge) was rolled out across Canberra in 2016 to around 500 Scouts. We intend on recommend the badge to the National Executive as a national badge that all Scouts can use and learn from.
The support from Cancer Council ACT in helping us in getting the badge off the ground has been amazing. This new initiative can help educate and save thousands of lives in the future.
Yours in Scouting.
