We want to extend a huge thank you to everyone who participated in this year’s Relay For Life — whether it was part of a team, a donation or lighting a candle and contributing to our virtual candlelight ceremony!
Due to the uncertainty around the pandemic, we had to make the difficult decision to change Relay 2021 from its traditional and physical format, and continue with Relay Your Way, in a virtual format.
to Relay For Life 2021 went ahead in the virtual form of Relay Your Way – but this didn’t stop our wonderful community from helping keep the Relay spirit alive.
Teams were encouraged to participate together (apart) and we are so grateful to those in our community who continued with Relay Your Way and helped keep the Relay spirit alive.
Some of our teams chose to do the bridge-to-bridge challenge, at Lake Burley Griffin on March 20 (the official day for Relay for Life) and other teams set their own challenges throughout March and April.
Congratulations to all our teams, with a special shout out to both Bold Bandanas and St Mary McKillop College who raised over $50,000 each!
The Bold Bandanas fundraised all year long and completed their Relay by doing bridge to bridge, where they officially opened Relay For Life 2021, with ABC news reporting on their achievements. They raised an incredible $53,000 – in total, Bold Bandanas have raised nearly half a million dollars since they first began Relay 22 years ago.
St Mary McKillop College hosted their own fabulous Relay with their year 12 students from 7am-7pm on the official day at their junior high school campus, walking laps of the oval. They had their own DJ providing them with music and entertainment, and included their own opening ceremony, with presentations. They completed their Relay with a candlelight ceremony.
We also held a virtual candlelight ceremony to help Remember, Celebrate and Fight Back against cancer. Thank you to everyone who donated to our page, which was created as the donation platform for our virtual candlelight ceremony.
In total Relay For Life 2021 raised over $148,000, with funds going towards providing support, education programs and cancer research - to help save lives and increase survival rates of those impacted by cancer in our community. Watch this space and our socials for more updates around Relay For Life 2022 where we plan to bring back Relay in its physical and traditional format.
