Gifts in Wills

Writing a Will is one of the most important things you can do for yourself and your family. After you’ve taken care of your loved ones, you may also wish to leave a gift to a cause close to your heart.

Leaving a gift in your Will to Cancer Council ACT, no matter the size, has an incredible impact on the future of cancer; helping to provide support services to local families impacted by cancer, supporting prevention programs that can help stop cancer before it starts, and funding life-saving research to better detect and treat cancer. Your legacy brings hope for a cancer-free future.

If you have already left a gift to Cancer Council ACT in your Will, or if you are considering doing so, please let us know. Sharing your intentions helps us plan future programs and allows us to say thank you.

gifts in wills

A Gift in Will, also known as a bequest, is a gift left to a person, charity or not-for-profit organisation of your choice, as stated in your Will.

There are several different types of gifts you can leave in your Will. We always recommend you seek advice from a solicitor when drafting your Will. The wording is very important, and your solicitor can advise you on the different types of gifts.

 A residual gift

After making provision for family and loved ones, you can choose to leave all or part of the remainder (residue) of your estate to Cancer Council ACT.

percentage gift

You can leave a nominated percentage (1-100%) of your entire estate, or a percentage of the residue of your estate once costs and other gifts have been processed.

Whole of estate

You can choose to leave your entire estate to Cancer Council ACT.

specific amount or specific item

You can leave a specific sum of money, known as a pecuniary gift, or specific items such as shares or real estate.

Any gift you include in your Will – big or small (even just 1% of your estate) – will help alleviate the impact of cancer for people in our community.

Your Will is an important legal document, and we strongly encourage that you consult a solicitor to ensure it is drafted correctly and reflects your final wishes.

It’s important to speak with your loved ones about your intentions so there are no surprises or complications, and to ensure your wishes are understood and fulfilled.
