Cancer Council ACT is delighted to once again bring the much-loved 24-hour event to the community. Relay For Life is a fun and moving experience that gives Canberrans the opportunity to recognise and celebrate local cancer survivors, those going through a cancer experience, and their carers.
April 13-14 2024 will see hundreds of Canberrans take to the AIS Athletics Track in Bruce to honour and remember loved ones lost and to raise vital funds for local cancer support, prevention, and research programs.
Teams have been fundraising since December 2023 and this year we welcome back St Mary MacKillop College Canberra and students from Griffin Hall, ANU!
St Mary MacKillop’s Year 12 students have taken part in Relay Your Way since the pandemic, walking, dancing, and skipping around their school oval.
This year, the school is expecting almost all of their 286 senior students to take part, and those who are unable to attend are still fundraising for the cause. Last year, St Mary MacKillop raised more than $71,000, beating their previous College record and accounting for one quarter of Canberra’s total efforts! Student Charlie Vandenberg said, ‘It’s a good chance to raise awareness and raising awareness is the first step to making those big changes, especially for cancer which affects so many of us’.
ANU students from Griffin Hall will also be returning to the track in the hope of beating their 2023 records. We spoke with Giann Condino, Charity Representative of Griffin Hall, who told us that he and his team find motivation to take part by ‘being able to make a difference and help others whilst also having fun with our friends’. Just through word of mouth he recruits other students for Relay For Life ‘Everyone who took part last year had so much fun - it was so easy to convince more of our friends to sign up’. This year, Maddi Nash Slattery is aiming for 100 laps of the relay track, hoping to beat her record of 95 from 2023. Christopher Bradley is hoping to walk an astonishing 160ks!
