Canberra is going ‘Yellow for Hope’ this Friday 28th August for Cancer Council’s much-loved campaign, Daffodil Day.
This year, Daffodil Day may look a little different with no site program, but the need to stop cancer is just the same. With iconic landmarks and buildings across Canberra lighting up yellow, Cancer Council ACT is also urging Canberrans to support by hosting yellow-themed fundraisers and by purchasing fresh daffodils online in support.
You might have heard the daffodil buzz on Canberra FM stations, MIX 106.3 and HIT 104.7. And while they are bringing a bit of fun and silliness, with giant life-sized daffodils delivering fresh daffodils across the Capital, it is for a serious and very important cause.
Money raised through the Daffodil Day Appeal will help fund life-saving cancer research.
It’s campaigns such as Daffodil Day that Ben Wrankmore is incredibly thankful for. Ben was just 20 years old when he developed a persistent cough, along with other health issues. After three visits to the doctor and various tests, Ben was diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma. He was told that it was an easy cancer to treat, but that wasn’t the case for Ben.
After two years of treatment, including 20 rounds of three types of chemotherapy, Ben was told treatment was not successful and the chance of going into remission was low. He then underwent surgery to remove a tumour and endured four weeks of radiotherapy. Ben was finally in remission. It was at this point he was rushed through for a stem cell transplant. While Ben remains in remission two years on, he did suffer side effects such as graft versus host disease.
It is only through high level cancer research that survival rates for Hodgkin Lymphoma have improved.
In 2020, Daffodil Day celebrates 34 years of turning Australia yellow. Cancer Council ACT is aiming to raise more than $65,000 through this appeal. For more information visit www.daffodilday.com.au/act or call 6257 9999.
