Celebrating Life 21 Times Over

Bold Bandannas 01

Bold Bandannas Relaying for 21 Years

Details

There are some things in life we only do once, but for a bold group of Canberra women, they will be celebrating 21 years of incredible achievement in March 2020 when they participate in Cancer Council ACT’s 21st annual Relay For Life. To date, their efforts have raised close to $400,000.

Led by Rosemary Drabsch, the Bold Bandannas began with a small group of pre-school staff who wanted to do something to support those affected by cancer in their community. Currently there are about 40 women who are proud to wear the bright wigs and bandannas that have become synonymous with the team at every Relay For Life event since it began in Canberra 21 years ago.

“Everyone is touched by cancer in some way. We’ve lost two of our team to cancer and we currently have a number of cancer survivors in the Bold Bandannas,” Ms Drabsch said.

Each year The Bold Bandannas register well before Christmas to achieve maximum fundraising impact and Ms Drabsch encourages others to do the same.

“The team fundraises throughout the year selling produce and items at market stalls, running raffles and by encouraging donations in order to help support those less fortunate – those who have been touched by cancer.” she said.

CEO of Cancer Council ACT, Sandra Turner, says Relay For Life is a chance for all of the Canberra community to recognise and celebrate local cancer survivors, patients and their carers and to honour and remember loved ones lost to cancer.

“Relay For Life is an amazing event. It’s fun, happy, sad, challenging and also emotionally healing at the same time,” said Ms Turner.

“Unless people have been a part of a Relay, it’s hard to describe the impact it has. I encourage all Canberrans to get a team together to help us and the Bold Bandannas to celebrate our 21st birthday.

“Everyone is encouraged to register early. A donation would be a great present for a hard to please relative or friend at Christmas time,” Ms Turner said.
