Walking the Talk this Relay

Details

Please Note: Canberra's Relay For Life 2020 is POSTPONED INDEFININTELY due to COVID-19.

Associate Professor Anneke Blackburn is one person who firmly believes in giving back wherever possible. As the recipient of the 2018-19 Cancer Council ACT Research Grant, A/Prof Blackburn is now working with family and friends to ‘give back’ a little of the support she received by registering a team  and fundraising for this year’s Cancer Council ACT Relay For Life to be held later this month.

A/Prof Blackburn was easily enticed into the team captain role by her son, and says the event is one way she can support the Council and is encouraging others to do the same.

“It’s important to encourage all of the community to support the Cancer Council here in the ACT as they continue to support researchers like myself, investigating ways to improve cancer treatments for people everywhere who are affected by cancer,” said A/Prof Blackburn.

I currently have some more time to give back and, like leading a research team, I look forward to leading a few more people around the track for the 24 hour Relay. It is a way to help all generations from the young to the elderly to get involved in supporting those touched by cancer.

CEO of Cancer Council ACT, Sandra Turner, says Relay For Life is a chance for all of the Canberra community to recognise and celebrate cancer survivors and their carers and to honour and remember loved ones lost to cancer.

“Recognising people’s journey and survivorship through Relay For Life confirms the importance of research and the difference it can make for cancer patients,” said Ms Turner.

“Relay For Life allows us to continue to raise vital funds to provide support services to patients affected by cancer and to continue funding cancer research here in the ACT.

Everyone registered for this year’s Canberra Relay For Life has a story to tell and all have been touched by cancer in some way,” she said.

A/Prof Blackburn and Ms Turner are encouraging the whole ACT community to get behind this year’s 21st Relay For Life to be held at the AIS Athletics Track on the 28th and 29th March.
