I have been working with both children and adults with cancer for the past 12 years, initially with a not-for-profit, and currently at the Canberra Region Cancer Centre (CRCC).

The resources and support available to cancer patients has grown during this time, and at the Canberra Region Cancer Centre we have been fortunate to work with the Cancer Council ACT in developing our new Information Lounge.

This space has been enhanced, to provide information to our patients and carers. This concept of self-selection, at a time which suits them, has been the driving force in the project. Cancer Council ACT provides much of the material which we stock on: diagnosis, treatment, financial assistance, supportive care and other areas of need during cancer treatment.

We also work closely with Cancer Council ACT on World Cancer Day, which aims to reduce the number of preventable deaths each year by raising cancer awareness. I feel fortunate to be working with a group of committed staff and volunteers, and the role is rewarding and ever changing. The patient focus that the volunteers are able to provide to improve the experience of patients and carers has become an important part of the Centre.
