Managing UV for employees and staff

Management and work health & safety staff play the most important role in reducing the risk of skin cancer and UV exposure in the workplace. While individual behaviours that all staff practice are important, the controls that are put in place to eliminate, substitute, or reduce the hazard are the most protective and reliable workplace measures.

Engineer controls

Workplace controls which prevent as much exposure to UV as possible are the "best buy" solution for workplaces. An example would be shade provision through moving or rescheduling tasks, or providing pop-up shade structures for outdoor workers. Shade does not eliminate UV exposure, and other controls in this domain include modifying reflective surfaces, and considering window tinting for vehicles.

Administrative controls

These are the policies and procedures that require workers to be aware of UV as a workplace hazard, and reinforce the behaviours that will keep them safe as best as possible. Cancer Council ACT can work with your team to develop a comprehensive and individualised workplace UV policy, or you can download and edit our "UV policy template."

Not sure where to start? Why not book a toolbox talk for your staff, or have our SunSmart team come to you to discuss how best to address UV in your workplace.
